Movies, documentaries and TV series

Post  Angantyr on Fri Feb 10, 2012 1:55 am

Post here good movies or documentaries.

This is one of the better documentaries I've seen in quite some time, it deals with the schism between the reality of war and how media portrays it:

I know it's not exactly a documentary but It's one of the few shows on the History channel I thoroughly enjoyed, especially since I'm immensely interested in aviation and history.

Hey Angantyr. You are in Luck, I have seen the complete hornblower thing in one of the darker days. It is old fashioned but I am certain in transports a good atmosphere from the time back then. A time in which bravery still mattered (almost as much as wearing a nice shiny white coat into battle).

The only thing I dont like about it is how is forcefisting the main character into your a...eyes. This probably comes from a weird mindset that there needs to be a hero who can do anything, survive everything and enjoy some heardy seamen on the way.

Have a look for yourself!

Thank you, Amon, I will, it looks a bit like Sharpe at Sea though Sean Bean appears more sympathetic than this guy.

Sharpe is definetly better than Hornblower! The first one being a killer, the second one a boy.

Sharpe was heavily influenced by Hornblower. It was actually one of the things that Cornwell got his inspiration from to write the sharpe books.

I really need to watch Hornblower, though. Razz

I also have a recommendation, the film Hua Mulan. It's Chinese but has English subtitles if you find the right DL. It doesn't have a great rating on IMDB but I thought it was an epic movie. There are parts that are a bit iffy, and the occasional historical inaccuracy but overall I really enjoyed. It's a refreshingly un-hollywood like war movie IMO.

It's based on a Chinese Legend/story. (Historians are unsure if it's true or not)

I've watched half of a 3 hours long ("movie"?) Hornblower, not sure if it's complete but that's what I found newly released on ze swedish pirates bay.
It does really remind me of Sharpe but to be fair I like Sharpe alot more since I'm not much into the naval stuff and it does seem like Hornblower focuses too much on Mr. Hornblower and the story ain't as intriguing as the one Sharpe had.
Still enjoyable though, got to watch the rest now.. Very Happy

For any interested in Medieval arms and armor:

Museum curators and conservators explore a fascinating topic—Misconceptions. Talks highlight the permanent collection and address misunderstandings commonly held by the public and, occasionally, even by specialists in the field.
