Crusader Kings II - Megalomaniacs welcome.

Post  Amon on Sun Jan 22, 2012 11:41 am

I am wondering if anyone wants to get this one on release.

Thing is, there will be a BIG steam vs. non-Steam (like Gamersgate) difference. Steam will have a different patching process and use the steam multiplayer platform. The issue is multiplayer compatibility and modability which will be problematic.

Again: Gamersgate and Steam copies are guaranteed not work together in multiplayer.

In case some of you guys want to get it, it might be best to go for the same retailer. I advise to go with the gamersgate edition which is independant of Steam (DRM) functionality and more easily modable. Another option is to wait and see how both editions will develop and which will be more practical on the long run.

Remember EU3.... poor people wont be able to play with the steam crowd if you catch my drift.

i feel that steam are on the edge now... they havnt managed to enrange the whole community but its starting to add up.... (geting hacked, leaving shit where its not supposed to be) and if they manage to become a apple clone im gona be upset.

by apple clone i mean that they start to entrap ppl in a closed loop. forcing ppl to use their service even if they dont really want to.

So if this is the case with CK2 and multi its beyond bad, i really like the idea of steam but im starting to doubt what they are becoming.

I agree with Krax on Steam. Also when I publish my game it won't be on Steam and I think that this action will mark the end of Steam.

My 2 cents. elephant

I posted this question twice on the paradox boards, so far there has been no answer by the devs who rather engage into mudslinging with the worst (pr)opponents of steam/GG.

The Steam version will probably have preorder boni as well, I guess even the same as the GG one.

The Steam version will have one advantage for singleplayer use: automated download & install of beta patches. These will be avaible too for manual download on the forum though. Additionally as multiplayers you dont want a patch which is not save game compatible to overwrite your current game files and kill your multiplayer session. You can turn off the patching in steam but that can be always messed up somehow hrhr.

About the general Steam thing. Most people are very happy with steam, but if something happens to your account it gets ALL your steam games at once. Their company seat is in the US so you cannot really sue them at all if a problem arises with hundreds of dollars worth of games.

I got lucky that when I lost my first account which is my fault for not entering the security questions - that I only had one game on it. Still its gone. I only lost games before when lending them to friends or when the disks (note: also other than cd) got bad.

So those wont get in the way via autopatching.

The thread with my questions got locked though, I will have to be more diplomatic next time und gleich mit dem Panzer in Paradox' Büroturm fahren.

PS. from Johan:

Beta-patches will be for computer-literate people. "

Ha ha!

I never could stand more than the opening sequence from that animated movie, the slapstick and young Ani and his dual-wielding, teenage girl padawan (with all the traits of a young spoiled, american girl, only with lightsabers...) was simply too much to bear.

It's an epic avatar though Laughing

Yeah thats correct.

http://www.crusaderkings.com/buy

lists the locations you can buy at. There is still no steam offer which is puzzling. Remember though that ALL retailers will sell the steam version, requiring steam and its quirks. The only exception will be Gamers Gate.

Btw. who is interested to buy the game? What are your opinions?

I'm also thinking of going for the GG version, I have nothing against steam but if there's a risk that I wouldn't be able to play with people who have the GG version, it's a risk I'm not willing to take. In the Paradox forum it seems to me that most people prefer GG.

I saw this on the Paradox forum today:

Amon, it's very hard to lose your Steam account; I lost my original e-mail associated with Steam and they have a lot of measures to get it back.

If you bought a Steam associated game in some store, you can use your scanner to digitalize the leaflet with the CD key, while also writing the Support Ticket number next to the CD key;

You can and always should save the transaction emails of games you buy digitally and use them as certification when engaging in Support conversations.

And any CD key (again, scanned and with the suppor ticket number of the case written manually by you in the leaflet) or transaction receipt of any game will be associated with your account. Therefore, you only really lose your Steam account if you're a complete idiot, lol.

One should always save evidence of his transactions, and leaflets of games.

Paradox now sell the boxed game (steam version) with a 10% discount = 36 EUR. No DLC's though for those who care about them.

However ordering on Gamersgate paying with dollars is still the cheapest way to buy the game with roughly 40 $ = 31 EUR. Digital copy + DLC's that is. You need to use a US proxy for this though if you cannot access the US platform of GG.

Fucking poor Americans, why do they always get everything so cheap?! 31 euros, and I have to pay 355 sek (40 euros), when it's even a swedish game!

Anyway, so have we decided on going for the GG version?

And how do I use a US proxy?

edit: do the americans also get 250 blue coins?

The bluecoins amount is the same everywhere, it equals 25 cents and they dissapear after 2 years. I hate those artificial currencies, they only exist so people loose a certain part of it because they cannot spend it. Like gift certificates. Good luck finding something that you WANT for the exact amount on the certificate!

So you always have to buy more or less and the rest...is to their advantage.

Yeah the GG version makes most sense.

1. Cheapest out there.
2. Everyone can join, even those who cannot afford to.
3. In case we have to create our own stable, patched, modded and expansion'ed/DLC'ed version like with Magna Mundi I cannot do it with steam. I need control of the files to do that. Steam does not like to share control.

Thanks for ruining the thread Harkon! Somehow Jurs harsh online treatment is affecting you - you must resist the urge!

I see what you mean with the blue coins Amon, if buying a game for 355 sek gives me 250 blue coins, it means I have to buy games from GG for at least 70.000 sek (7900 euro)
over a two year period, to get one game for free!

Still, does anyone know how to get a US proxy? I'd like to save those 9 euros if I can.

Why is the thread stretched so when I try to make a reply?

Anyway, you can find them online Gule, just google it. Same with US addresses btw, so you can order cheap hardware and clothing or whatever from those poor americans to your US address and then get it sent to Sweden afterwards.
